New year, new laws will cost drivers, shoppers in Va., Md.
Starting Sunday, two new laws go into effect that will have an instant impact on thousands in our region. Especially their wallets.
A 5-cent bag tax goes into effect in Montgomery County, mirrored after the District's law that went into effect two years ago.The charge will apply to each paper or plastic carryout bag provided by retail establishments.
It's intended to encourage the use of reuseable bags and to reduce litter and cleanup costs. The money will be used for the county's litter cleanup initiative.
And in Virginia, drivers in the Commonwealth will have an extra 25 cents tacked on at the main toll gate at the Dulles Toll Road.
Officials say the extra cash will keep the toll road running smoothly...and help fund the Dulles Metrorail Project.
