Politico: Des Moines Register poll shows Romney ahead, with Santorum surging
Politico reports that Mitt Romney now holds the lead in Iowa with 24 percent, according to the new Des Moines Register poll released Saturday night.
Ron Paul is in second place at 22 percent, but Rick Santorum is mounting a surge and comes in third with 15 percent. The Register shows Newt Gingrich falling to 12 percent, Rick Perry to 11 percent, and Michele Bachmann at 7 percent.
And Santorum's surge could be continuing to rise. According to Politico, "The Register poll also gauged Santorum's late momentum burst. In the final two days, it was being conducted on Thursday and Friday, Santorum rose to 21 percent, edging into second place ahead of Paul, while Romney remained at 24 percent."
Politico says that the Register poll has proven to be one of the most reliable predictors of caucus results.
