A Southwest Airlines employee who was in a collision at Dulles Thursday morning has died.

Southwest issued a statement Friday afternoon regarding the incident. They said that they are in the preliminary stages of an investigation into the incident that lead to the death of the baggage cart driver.

"On Thursday, Jan. 26, at approximately 7am, a Southwest Employee was involved in a collision between a baggage cart and a mobile lounge at Washington Dulles Airport," the statement read. They added that the employee was immediately taken to a nearby hospital. .

"We learned earlier today, Friday, Jan. 27, that the Employee passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. We continue to work with all relevant agencies, including the local authorities and the airport, to investigate events surrounding the accident," Southwest said. 

"The Southwest Airlines Family is greatly saddened by the passing of our Southwest Family Member, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies and support to his entire family at this time," the statement concluded.

The Southwest driver was airlifted to Inova Hospital and died overnight.

No charges have been filed yet.
