Two killed, 3 hospitalized in Bethesda crash
Investigators are looking for the cause of a deadly crash on New Year’s Day in Bethesda that killed two people and left three injured.
Police say there were five people total in the vehicle, which was involved in the single-vehicle crash at about 3 a.m. Sunday at Lancaster Drive and Jones Bridge Road.
The 22-year-old driver of the 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer was taken to Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore in serious condition.
The other two rear seat passengers, both males and 18 and 19 years old, were transported to Suburban Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. One other passenger remained in serious condition.
According to friends, Katie Karlson, known as Keke, was a passenger in SUV that careened off Jones Bridge Road in Bethesda and hit a tree. Friends say she was in her second trimester of pregnancy. Also in the car, friends say, was Nick Clayton.
Nate Lucas, who knew the victims in Sunday’s crash, says the reality of what happened is too much to bare.
"It’s rough, but I haven't even fully processed it yet cause I'm still in a lot of disbelief,” he said.
Lucas says he and Clayton were best friends and he will miss his sense of humor the most.
It’s still unclear where the group was coming from before the crash.
Authorities are investigating whether alcohol or speed were a factor in the fatal crash.
