William Lloyd McDonald charged in 2006 murder cold case
A 31-year-old man has been indicted in the cold case murder of a man that happened in 2006 near Ft. Meade, Anne Arundel County Police say.
On Aug. 12, 2006, a man and woman were in a Ford SUV when the suspect, William Lloyd McDonald, formerly of Glen Burnie, attempted to rob them. The male victim, Benjamin Curtis, handed over his wallet. McDonald then told the female victim to give him her purse.
An altercation then broke out between Curtis and McDonald, police say, when the suspect entered the car. During the fight, McDonald allegedly shot and killed Curtis. The female victim was able to get away unharmed.
Curtis was taken to a shock trauma center, where he died shortly thereafter.
The murder weapon was located in a car in New Jersey about a month after the shooting, but the occupants of that car had no connection to the murder.
Earlier this year, though, information brought to the attention of Anne Arundel County Police corroborated with cell phone records from the night of the shooting.
Authorities then worked with State's Attorney's offices in both Anne Arundel and Montgomery County as well as Montgomery County Police to track down McDonald.
McDonald faces life in prison on the murder charge alone. He faces a litany of other charges as well, including armed robbery, use of a handgun and possession of a firearm.
