Adele holds new Billboard record surpassing Whitney Houston
February 23, 2012 - 02:08 pm
Adele now holds the record for holding the longest running No.1 spot by a woman on the Billboard charts as 21 reached its 21st week, surpassing the late Whitney Houston’s The Bodyguard.
21 sold close to another 500,000 last week, the biggest gain ever for a female artist since Neilson SoundScan began tracking data in 1991, according to kissfm.com. Its sales reached 730,000 due to the Grammy performance where she performed for the first time since her throat surgery.
Houston’s album, Whitney-The Greatest Hits, holds a spot on the charts at No.2. due to her recent passing, according to eonline.com.
21 has sold 7,353,000 in the U.S. and 20 million albums worldwide to date.
