Arizona bill targets digitally altered ads
February 20, 2012 - 08:55 pm
Phoenix, Ariz. representative Katie Hobbs has proposed a bill that readers should be made aware when an ad uses photo manipulation techniques like airbrushing out wrinkles, smoothing skin texture or slimming body types.
Hobbs wants all such images to come with this disclaimer:
“Post-production techniques were made to alter the appearance in this advertisement. When using this product, similar results may not be achieved.”
The motivation behind the legislation is that fake photos can lead to unrealistic expectations of beauty as well as body image.
The bill was modeled after British laws where companies are reprimanded for heavy use of Photoshopping.
