D.C. police are investigating after finding a body in the C&O Canal in Georgetown.

Police say they received a call reporting a body on the edge of the canal near several popular restaurants.

Police are not sharing many details about this case, but they say it's an unidentified female and it's still too early to determine the cause of death or how the body ended up in the canal.

It's also unclear if this death investigation is related to a call D.C. Fire received last night, reporting a person in the canal possibly swimming.

First responders searched the canal around 7 p.m. Friday night after getting a call reporting a person in the water near 30th Street NW.

But their search turned up nothing.

Saturday morning, a body was spotted around 10:30 a.m., half-submerged in the canal, behind the House of Sweden.

The investigation attracted dozens of tourists, curious and shocked to see a police investigation in the heart of Georgetown.

Nearby, the canal feeds into the Potomac River, which is often busy with local rowing crews. But they say the canal is usually empty.

After collecting evidence, police removed the body.

And bystanders were left wondering what happened here.

By mid-day, the area was re-opened to the public.

Police will work to determine the woman's identity.

And the medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
