A federal judge in Washington is determining whether John Hinckley should be allowed to spend more time at his mother's Virginia home. Closing statements are expected Thursday.

Fifty-six-year-old John Hinckley was found by a jury to be insane when he shot and wounded Reagan outside a Washington hotel in 1981.

Doctors say his mental illness has been in remission for years, however, and a judge has granted Hinckley increasing freedom from the hospital.

In 2005, he was given permission to start making overnight visits to his mother's home in Williamsburg, Va., and those visits have since been increased to up to 10 days.
