D.C. fraudulent unemployment scheme sends 90 employees on leave, authorities say
February 6, 2012 - 01:54 pm
Dozens of D.C. government employees have been placed on leave as they're investigated for taking fraudulent unemployment benefits while working for the city.
Nearly 90 people face firing and prosecution for their part in the scheme. About 60 more cashed unemployment checks while employed by the District.
"I would suspect this is not something recent going, but we were surprised…yes were," says Lisa Mallory, director of D.C. Employment Services.
Nearly $800,000 in unemployment benefits have been paid to working city employees since 2009.
The amount of money received fraudulently ranges from a few hundred dollars to more than $20,000.
