D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier to appear at oversight hearing
February 29, 2012 - 04:53 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - An advocate for transgender people is criticizing the District of Columbia police department for failing to protect the community.
Jason Terry of the DC Trans Coalition testified Wednesday at a D.C. Council oversight hearing on the department's performance.
Terry says the department hasn't adequately addressed a spike in violence against transgender people in the city in the past year. He says he doesn't think enough resources are being devoted to the problem.
He says "it's amateur hour" for the department each time a transgender person is killed.
Chief Cathy Lanier is among the witnesses scheduled to testify at the hearing.
