A D.C. police officer was struck by a car while she was part of a police escort for the president of Georgia.

Wednesday afternoon, a police officer was driving a motorcycle as part of a motorcade that included Mikheil Saakashvili, president of the country of Georgia, when a car went around the bus, drove into an intersection and hit the officer.

The accident occurred at the intersection of 14th Street and F Street NW.

Police say they had stopped traffic on 14th Street to let the motorcade pass by on F Street, but a woman drove her white car around a bus that was stopped on 14th and hit an officer who was on her motorcycle.

"It was one of those scenes that you think you'll never see," said John Townsend who was nearby when it happened. "Suddenly there was a sound of a collision, and I saw an officer sprawled in the street. She had been hit by this car. The driver was horror-stricken because she had hit a police officer."

The officer was injured but the injuries were non-life threatening. She was taken to an area hospital.

Saakashvili and a delegation from Georgia were in the U.S. on a diplomatic trip. Saakashvili met with President Obama at the White House on Monday and met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton earlier Wednesday.

The accident delayed the motorcade for 45 minutes.

Police have not yet said if charges will be filed.

Just before the accident and only a few blocks away, a driver lost control and slammed into a building, hitting a woman and child in the process.
