WASHINGTON (AP) - Construction workers are rebuilding old streets in Georgetown with their original bricks in an effort to preserve history.

WTOP reports that the District Department of Transportation is dismantling six blocks of O and P streets, between 37th Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Workers will replace utility lines and then return the bricks to their original position.

The first completed block of work, on P Street between 34th and 35th streets, was reopened to traffic on Thursday.

The work began in March and officials hope to have it completed by late summer.

The project costs about $11 million. A majority of the cost is being paid for with federal highway funding for historic purposes.
