Great Mills apartment fire kills one man
A man was killed late Wednesday night in St. Mary's County when his apartment caught fire, officials say.
St. Mary's County fire officials say that about 45 firefighters responded to the garden-style apartment building at 45955 Foxchase Drive in Great Mills overnight to find smoke pouring out a two-bedroom, first-floor apartment. The fire had nearly burned itself out by the time first responders arrived, though.
Upon entering the apartment, firefighters found the man dead in a chair in the living room, where they say the bulk of the fire was concentrated. Officials found evidence of smoking materials and a home medical oxygen unit nearby.
Officials have yet to identify the victim or an exact cause of the fire. They say that smoke alarms were not operating at the time the fire broke out.
