Lenny Harris murder: Third person in custody in activist's murder
Prince George’s County Police announced Monday that they're obtained a warrant for the arrest of a third suspect in the murder of activist Lenny Harris.
The suspect is Tyrone Lewis, 26, of Fort Washington. Police believe Lewis is the tattooed man caught on a security camera using Harris’ ATM card hours after Harris disappeared last fall. They also believe he is the mastermind of the murder.
Lewis lived in the neighborhood where Harris’ body was disposed of in a well on the property of an abandoned home. The body was discovered and identified in late January.
Lewis has been in custody in Alexandria since last October on an unrelated car theft charge. He was secretly identified by police early on in the investigation of Harris’ disappearance based on cell phone records which showed Lewis and Harris spoke just before Harris was abducted.
The investigation into Lewis, however, stalled until an anonymous tipster called police two weeks ago and told them where to look for Harris’ body.
Police then arrested 49-year-old Linwood Johnson of Temple Hills on Jan. 31. According to charging documents, Johnson then told authorities that 20-year-old Ivan Newman of Charles County was the third partner in the crime. Newman was arrested last week.
Harris, 53, was apparently known to Johnson through prior dealings. Police believe the three suspects simply thought Harris would have money and so he was targeted for a robbery.
Investigators suggest the robbery and murder may linked to the drug trade.
Hundreds gathered in a northeast D.C. church to honor and remember harris Monday.
While they grieved, his family and friends welcomed news of a third arrest in connection with Harris's murder.
“Wow wonderful praise god,” says friend Nathan Carter. “Praise god.”
Harris's legions of friends said Monday is a day to remember, not speculate.
“Because it's going to unravel itself because that is the way God do things,” says Harris’ friend A.J. Parham.
