Melvin Smith, Frederick murder suspect, due in court
February 8, 2012 - 06:26 am
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - A man charged with murdering a Frederick woman in July is seeking to suppress evidence of the alleged offense.
Twenty-eight-year-old Melvin Smith is scheduled for a pretrial hearing Wednesday in Frederick. Prosecutors say Smith rejected a plea offer last week that would have resulted in a life sentence.
He is charged with first-degree murder in the July 8 shooting of 33-year-old Tranice Richardson outside a Frederick apartment complex.
Court records show that Smith fathered at least one of Richardson's four children.
He was arrested in the Pittsburgh suburb of McKeesport, Pa., three weeks after the shooting.
