WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro says it will take three more years to finish track work along its red line.

The transit agency has been working to fix safety problems that go back years, including the replacement of all track circuits and the addition of special rails to prevent derailments.

But Rob Troup, the assistant general manager of Metro's infrastructure, tells The Washington Examiner that riders will still see some level of shutdowns and single tracking even once the work is completed.

This weekend's Metro work includes single-tracking between the Van Ness-UDC and Friendship Heights stations.

The red line is Metro's busiest and Troup says riders should see trains running on schedule more often once the work is completed.
