Robbery, attempted carjacking in Columbia Heights
Police are investigating what began as a road rage incident and ended in a robbery and attempted carjacking in the heart of Columbia Heights.
The early morning attack was unsettling to residents. Four men with guns tried to rob and carjack another car filled with people, but the victims fought back, followed their attackers, found police and now the robbers are all behind bars.
At 3 a.m. there weren't as many people out on 14th Street near Park Road, according to the police report. A 34-year-old D.C. woman was driving a Lexus with three other people--two men and a 41-year-old woman.
Police say four men in an Oldsmobile got upset about how the woman made a turn in front of them so they followed the Lexus and when the woman stopped the car, the men jumped out, walked up to the Lexus, pulled out guns and started to fight with the men in the Lexus.
The attackers pulled the woman out of the drivers seat and robbed everyone. One of the attackers yelled, "Take the car!" One tried but the Lexus was in park, so the suspects all jumped in their Oldsmobile and fled the scene.
The victims followed the suspects. Along the way, they saw a D.C. police officer and waved him down. They found the suspects on 9th Street NW and Butternut Street NW.
"I heard all this screaming and everything," said neighbor Vera Majett.
The Majetts were getting ready for church when they saw what was happening outside. They applauded the victims.
"I love it. I love it. I am glad by did. These people get away with too much," Majett said.
