'Doonesbury' abortion take irks some newspapers
Daybreak Daily’s afternoon stoking of the pop-culture fires finds a comic strip being frowned upon, an award winner being frowned upon, other things, and the mystery music video.
NO FEAR: For the artist but not for some newspapers, per the Washington Post, “Only once in the long history of “Doonesbury” has Garry Trudeau’s syndicate ever intensely objected to one of his story arcs. It was 1985, and the subject was abortion. Starting (today), amid heated debate about pre-termination ultrasound and sonogram bills in Virginia and Texas, Trudeau, whose comic strip has about 1,400 clients, will tackle the politically sensitive issue of abortion head-on.” http://wapo.st/A8WbCg
YOU GO GIRL: Kristen Stewart takes a free ride, per Us Weekly, “The trailer for the 21-year-old actress' new flick On the Road has been released, which shows Robert Pattinson's real-life love revealing more than ever before. In one scene, Stewart goes topless while driving with fellow shirtless costars Garrett Hedlund, 27, and Sam Riley, 32.” http://bit.ly/wx4i5M
WE OBJECT: While wondering whether Iran doesn’t have more important things on its plate, per the AP, “Iranian authorities canceled a ceremony Monday in honor of the country's Oscar-winning director even though the government had hailed his win as a triumph over a competitor from Israel. The event for Asghar Farhadi, whose movie, "A Separation," won the Oscar for best foreign film last month, was abruptly scrapped after authorities denied permission, according to the semiofficial Ilna news agency.” http://apne.ws/wBg2VJ
OF CABBAGES: And kids, per Deadline Hollywood, “Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company will finance and produce development of a feature film based on Garbage Pail Kids, the trading card line published by Topps.” http://bit.ly/zQr1Hv
NOW YOU CAN SLEEP: A vexing question is answered, per Entertainment Tonight, “Halle Berry is engaged to her Dark Tide co-star Olivier Martinez, ET can now confirm. Back in January, Us Magazine reported that, according to a source, Martinez, 46, proposed to Berry, 45, over the Christmas holidays, but this is the first confirmation from the Oscar-winning actress herself.” http://bit.ly/wu0klh
YOU KNOW YOU’RE GETTING OLD WHEN. . : Stuff like this happens, per People, “Curly Sue is all grown up – and married! Alisan Porter, a singer-songwriter and actress – best known as the star of 1991's Curly Sue, directed by the late John Hughes, alongside Jim Belushi and Kelly Lynch – tied the knot Saturday with husband Brian Autenrieth, PEOPLE exclusively confirms.” http://bit.ly/xHYh33
NAME THAT ACRONYM: Just don’t do it on TV, per the Hollywood Reporter, “No matter how ABC’s new series GCB portrays Christian women in Dallas, it seems its detractors will never really be able to get over its original working title taken from Kim Gatlin’s novel, Good Christian Bitches.” http://bit.ly/ArxC66
HASHTAG HELL: Wait. Him? Heaven for sure, per E!, “Is there a social media network more hell-bent on morbidity than Twitter? Judging by the number of celebrities it's attempted to kill off all in the name of trending, we'd say no. And the latest superstar victim? None other than Justin Bieber.” http://eonli.ne/z63c7w
FUN AND DONE: Ah, the life of the royals, per the AP, “That's how royal watchers have seen Prince Harry's first major diplomatic tour - a 10-day jaunt to the Caribbean and South America to represent his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II as part of celebrations marking her Diamond Jubilee. The trip offered Harry, 27, a first step onto the international stage in a role that will become increasingly common as a younger generation of royals step to the fore.” http://apne.ws/z1nY5O
