WASHINGTON (AP) - Capital Bikeshare has started a pilot program with a nonprofit group in the District of Columbia that offers homeless people a yearlong membership in the bike-sharing service.

The program started on Thursday with Capital Bikeshare offering $50 memberships to 10 people from Back on My Feet DC who had maintained at least a 90 percent attendance average in three weekly group runs and completed several educational and job training programs.

The nonprofit works to create independence and self-sufficiency within the homeless community through physical activity.

Members of the pilot program will be able to use bicycles to get to and from appointments like job interviews, classes and training.
