Costco is finally coming to Washington, D.C. - specifically to the Fort Lincoln neighborhood Northeast Washington, according to the Washington Post.

Trees were cleared from the 44-acre area to make room for the Shops at Dakota Crossing. The retail center will feature not only Costco, but also Marshall's and a Shoppers Food Warehouse.

Across the way, Ryan Homes is constructing a development of 314 townhouses, with more than 30 of them already sold.

"We lose about $1 billion in retail sales a year," Victor L. Hoskins, deputy mayor for planning and economic development, told the Washington Post. "Those retail sales are going to Virginia and Maryland. It’s fine that Virginia and Maryland have these stores, but people in D.C. really want to shop in [their] town.”

Costco currently has locations in Pentagon City, Springfield, Lanham, Beltsville and Brandywine.
