A popular restaurant and night spot in the heart of D.C.'s Petworth neighborhood remains closed Sunday morning, a day after the Metropolitan Police Department closed it following a stabbing.

The stabbing occurred at about 2 a.m. Saturday at the Island Cafe at 829 Upshur St. NW. Police say that an altercation broke out between two men, which ended with one of them being stabbed in the stomach.

Because of the violence, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier ordered the establishment to shut down for up to 96 hours, pending a review from the city's liquor board.

The Island Cafe's owners were not available for comment.

Some of the club's neighbors are stunned, saying that this was the first time they recalled any violence at the Island Cafe.

"I'm pretty surprised that it's closed down because last night it was nice...jumping and everything," one Northwest resident said.

Contrary to that, ABC 7 News has discovered that this is not the first time the club has been shut down. In March of 2008, the Island Cafe was shuttered after a man was shot there.

The violence has spurred community activist Keith Jarrell into action.

"I think we really have to value what's most important in our neighborhood," Jarrell said. "I think it's time to review the license and see the appropriate actions are taken."
