Joe Byrd, jazz bassist, killed in Edgewater vehicle crash
A 78-year-old musician and the brother of jazz great Charlie Byrd was killed in a vehicle crash in Edgewater Tuesday.
Bassist Eugene Byrd, who was known as Joe Byrd, of Edgewater, was killed in the crash at Solomons Island Road near Lee Airpark Drive after another driver ran a red light and struck his vehicle, authorities said.
According to his biography on his web site, Byrd was born in 1933 in Chuckatuck, Va. He was the youngest of four brothers, with the eldest being jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd.
He graduated from Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. He performed with his brother in The Charlie Byrd Trio and, along with Charlie, was a Good Will Ambassador for the State Department.
