ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Anne Arundel County police have released documents that show that officers and staff researched County Executive John Leopold's political opponents.

Police released the documents Wednesday in response to requests by the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland and news organizations. The documents released include what appears to be publicly accessible information, including news reports, that might be collected by a political campaign about opponents.

Leopold was indicted this month on charges of misconduct in office relating to how he used his security detail, including allegations that he told police to keep dossiers on his opponents.

The files contained information on Joanna Conti, who ran unsuccessfully against Leopold in the 2010 election, and her husband; former Councilman Thomas Redmond and Carl Snowden, director of the Attorney General's Office of Civil Rights.
