Kevin O'Toole, firefighter hurt in Riverdale flash fire, condition improving
The condition of a Bladensburg volunteer firefighter severely injured in a flash fire in Riverdale in February is improving, a fire official said.
Kevin O'Toole, 22, of Long Island, New York, was one of seven firefighters injured while battling the blaze on February 24.
Investigators later determined that an arsonist intentially set the fire and was also responsible for another blaze just weeks before in the house next door.
O'Toole was listed in critical condition with second and third degree burns to 40 percent of his body.
But after weeks in the hospital’s intensive care unit, O’Toole has been moved to a “step down unit, an indication that he is progressing well through his treatments,” said Chief Mark Brady, Prince George’s County Fire Department.
O’Toole remains in the burn unit at Washington Hospital Center.
An investigation is ongoing.
