Mandatory ignition interlock devices called for by IIHS

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety is making a strong push for making ignition interlocks mandatory nationwide for all DUI offenders, USA Today reports.

An IIHS official cites statistics that a nationwide law mandating that breathalyzers be placed in the cars of people convicted of drunk driving would reduce the chances they do it again by 11 or 12 percent.

Fifteen states across America currently require ignition interlocks, which force the driver to blow into a breathalyzer before being able to start their car. Maryland and Virginia only mandate interlock devices for people whose blood-alcohol content measured more than 0.15 percent at the time of their offense, USA Today says.
