Marilyn Bart, an English teacher at George C. Marshall High School, allegedly asked an African-American student to read a poem by Langston Hughes in a "blacker" style.

Bart had allegedly singled out Jordan Shumate, the 14-year-old student, in the past because of his race. He is the only black student in the English class, which was getting a lesson in stereotypes.

The freshman says he was again singled out to explain why African American people like grape soda and rap music.

The school system's Office of Equity and Compliance is investigating. A schools spokeswoman says an inquiry in standard in such cases.

Bill Reichhardt, Bart's attorney, tells The Washington Post that Bart intends to fully cooperate with the investigation.
