Maurice Dews gets 15 years for series of arsons in Maryland

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) - A District of Columbia man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of arsons in Maryland.

Prosecutors believe Maurice Dews set at least 18 fires in D.C. and Prince George's County from January 2008 to June 2011.

The three Maryland fires occurred in Landover and Landover Hills.

Dews was sentenced Wednesday in Prince George's County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to three counts of first-degree arson.

That sentence will run concurrent to a 25-year-prison term he recently received in D.C.

Prince George's fire officials say Dews applied at one point to be a volunteer firefighter, but his most recent application was denied because of a suspended license.
