Updated: March 16, 2012 - 10:57 am
Two people were killed on Thursday afternoon in Silver Spring when a passenger car crossed the center of a roadway and crashed into a tow truck, police say.
The crash happened just before 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the 9300 block of Piney Branch Road. An investigation revealed that a Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound when, for reasons still unknown, the car crossed over to the westbound lanes and collided with a Ford tow truck.
Olin Dale Sorenson, 26, was transported to Washington Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead. The other victim, 23-year-old Sylvia Clarice Taiko Reiff of Silver Spring, died at the scene. Police say Sorenson was the driver of the Corolla, while Reiff was in the front passenger seat.
Police say the driver of the tow truck, 51-year-old Melesio J. Monterroza Cartagena, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
