Baby dies after pregnant mother in SE stabbed
A pregnant woman has been stabbed in Southeast D.C. Her baby was pronounced dead after delivery in a hospital, police say.
The woman was attacked by a man in the 4200 block of 9th Street about 2:30 a.m. Thursday.
The woman, who was eight months pregnant, was conscious when she was taken to a hospital. Doctors delivered the baby, identified as Kuron Rashad Hunt, but he was later pronounced dead, police say.
Authorities are still searching for the assailant.
Neighbors in the Southeast apartment complex where the victim was stabbed tell ABC7 news they awoke to screams around 2:30 Thursday morning. When they opened their doors, they say an eight month pregnant woman was yelling call 911, crying she had just been stabbed in the stomach.
Police sources say the woman told detectives she was sleeping when she woke up to a man standing above her, he stabbed her and left the apartment. Sources added the woman said she did not know the man.
Neighbors who spoke with the pregnant woman right after the stabbing said she was sleeping on the sofa when it happened.
"I have been paranoid all day because I am like what really happened because my kids go to school over there," says local resident Joanne Gilchrist.
D.C. Police say there were no signs of forced entry. Witnesses say family were so upset over the news early Thursday morning shattered the building's front window in their grief.
Neighbors say the woman is 31 years old, has three other children and is recovering as she mourns at the hospital surrounded by relatives.
