Premature babies face higher health risks as kids

Babies born just a few weeks early have a slightly higher risk of health problems in infancy, according to new research.

The research challenged views that long-term health outcomes for moderate and late preterm babies were similar to those for babies born at full term.

For example, 15 percent of babies born full term experienced asthma or wheezing as young children but the figure increased to 17 percent for those born just a few weeks early, the article stated.

One of the main findings was of the increased risk of babies being born a little bit earlier if the mother was of low socio-economic status or if she smoked.

More than 14,000 children were studied.
