Robert Benscoter arrested for beating his mother with hammer
An Annapolis man has been arrested after police say he violently beat his mother with a hammer.
Robert Benscoter is charged with attempted second degree murder, first and second degree assault and reckless endangerment.
Anne Arundel County police say the 33-year-old used a hammer to strike his mother repeatedly in the head and torso on March 20. Authorities say the 61-year-old victim fled to a neighbor’s home, where she called police. When officers arrived at the scene, Benscoter was already gone.
About an hour and a half later, the suspect was located a half mile away, hiding in a heavily wooded area. He was taken into custody without incident.
The victim was transported to shock trauma in Baltimore, where she is currently in serious, but stable condition.
