Safeway, Giant strike averted after tentative agreement

Two major grocery chains with stores throughout the D.C. area came to new contract agreement with their employees Thursday, averting a strike that could have started as early as Sunday, the Washington Business Journal reports.
The Washington Business Journal's Jeff Clabaugh says that unions representing workers at both Giant and Safeway stores in Washington and Baltimore came to a tentative agreement with the large chains.
The president of the union, Tom McNutt, told the Washington Business Journal in a statement that the contract includes increases in wages and better health and retirement benefits.
