Smokey Robinson to perform for Duke Ellington School of the Arts

There was quite a treat this weekend for students, staff, and parents at D.C.'s Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

Smokey Robinson, a living Motown legend, will perform for the school tomorrow.

But Smokey spent today hanging out with students.

At Duke Ellington today, they had Smokey on the hall monitors as student musicians practiced, preparing to perform with him tomorrow night at the Kennedy Center..

Smokey and the Miracles were around when TV was black and white. So how can these kids relate to someone from their parents' and grandparents' eras? That didn't seem to be a problem.

"I made no bones about it," Robinson says. "I wanted to ve a singer and I wanted that to be my life. but i grew up in the 'hood in Detroit and I didn't think that that would be possible. So I am living my wildest childhood dream right now."

Robinson is the fifth big star to do a benefit performance for Duke Ellington -- for free. And the Kennedy Center is donating the space.

Principal Rory Pullens says the school expects to net half a million dollars.
