March 20, 2012 - 08:25 pm
BALTIMORE (AP) - Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center have completed a facial transplant.
Officials say a multi-disciplinary team of physicians from the school of medicine completed the 36-hour procedure Tuesday at the hospital in Baltimore.
Spokeswoman Mary Lynn Carver says the transplant, which included the tongue and upper and lower jaws, was the most extensive performed to date and the hospital is the second in the nation to perform a full face transplant.
Carver says more details about the transplant and the 37-year-old American man who underwent the procedure will be released at a news conference next week.
