2012 NFL Draft: Robert Griffin III era begins in Washington
Robert Griffin III hasn't even taken a step onto the field for a Washington Redskins game - let alone a practice - but his jersey is already flying off the shelves.
The day after Griffin was selected No. 2 overall Thursday night by the Washington Redskins, ending a month-long courtship aimed at ending a revolving door at quarterback that hampered the franchise for two decades, the enthusiasm of fans has yet to wane.
"The Redskins fans...the diehards...are so in need of him," Redskins fan Pam Herrell said. "It has been 20 years since we had a Super Bowl win and everyone is so excited."
The Redskins will formally introduce the Heisman Trophy winner as their new quarterback during a press conference Saturday at 2 pm.
Meanwhile, in Washington, the RG3 era has already begun.
HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!It's an honor to be your quarterback#CantWait— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) April 27, 2012
Commemorative 'RG3' gear is now available to the general public. At G & G Outfitters in Lanham, owner Douglas Gardner says they've been cranking out T-shirts as quickly as people can buy them.
"They're going quick," Gardner said. "As quickly as we can put them in stores, they're selling out."
Now that the speculation about RG3 has moved to reality, the buzz probably won't die down until Sept. 9, when the Redskins open the 2012 season in New Orleans.
"I think he's going to bring a lot of positive energy to the team," Redskins fan Jason Sporo said. "(He'll) get our franchise headed in the right direction."
