2012 NFL Draft: Robert Griffin III ready for pressure in Washington
On Thursday, Robert Griffin III will officially face the pressures of being an NFL quarterback. On Tuesday, though, he faced the pressures of making sandwiches.
Griffin appeared at a New York City Subway in advance of Thursday's first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, where it's all but certain the Washington Redskins will take him 2nd overall. He even had a nearly life-sized statue of himself unveiled - made entirely of Subway sandwich goods.
However, his attention quickly turned back to business. Earlier on Tuesday, Indianapolis Colts officials announced that they'd be taking Andrew Luck, the Stanford quarterback, first overall on Thursday. Washington picks second, and he says he'll be glad to be in Washington and is ready to prove himself.
"I can't come in thinking I'm (the) big dog," Griffin said. "I have to prove to those guys I can work. I may be the fans pick, but I still need to beat out Rex Grossman."
Griffin, who captured the Heisman Trophy in 2011 while leading the Baylor Bears to the Alamo Bowl, says he knows hoisting the hopes of a loyal fan base - who has been yearning for the team's first playoff trip since 2007 - certainly won't be easy. It's a challenge, though, that he's ready to accept.
"Pressure is something you feel when you don't know what you're doing," he said. "You want all that pressure on you because that means you have a chance, and you want that chance."
