Paul Rinehart is a local guy, who just wanted to make local brews.

"I had people who had tasted my beer and said I should do this for a living, and then I took a leap of faith and just sort of, did it," he says.

In July of 2010, he opened Baying Hound Aleworks in a tiny Rockville garage. it's a labor intensive job that just barely breaks even.

Baying Hound produces 120 barrels of beer a year. Rinehart and his partner mostly sell bottles to local stores and. Today, they're tapping their latest creation.

Craft breweries aren't all that unique. In fact, in Maryland, there's more than 20. So Rinehart says the trick to keeping all of this afloat isn't to edge out the competition - it's to collaborate with the competition.

"Well, it's friendly competition, but there's a lot of collaboration,” he says. “In a down economy, people drink."

Rinehart also uses free advertising – in the form of twitter, facebook and their website.

But in the end, it's mostly about passion.

"This is a place where I can express myself,” Rinehart says.
