WASHINGTON (AP) - The 18-year-old daughter of a U.S. Marine who committed suicide is being honored at an awards ceremony.

Erin Gallagher is to be recognized Tuesday evening at a gala event hosted by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, or TAPS.

Gallagher's father, Marine Gunnery Sgt. James Gallagher, committed suicide in 2006. Since then, Gallagher, who is graduating from high school this spring, has worked with TAPS, including participating in a panel discussion about losing a loved one to suicide.

Gallagher told The Associated Press on Tuesday she was a "daddy's little girl" and that losing her father has been a difficult experience.

She's being honored with the Ted Stevens Leadership Award, which recognizes surviving family members of fallen soldiers who have tried to help others.
