George Zimmerman's lawyers leave him, the case
In a bombshell announcement, the lawyers for George Zimmerman dropped their client—the Florida man who claims he shot and killed 17 year old Trayvon Martin in self-defense.
Zimmerman, without consulting his attorneys, recently set up a website seeking donations for legal bills and reportedly talked with the special prosecutor handling the case.
“To handle it this way is to suggest that he may not be in complete control of what's going on,” said Hal Uhrig, Zimmerman’s former attorney.
Martin's death and a lack of charges filed against Zimmerman have sparked outrage. Tuesday night, the D.C. Armory hosted a forum on the lessons learned from this case.
Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton says she'll introduce a bill to help state's reduce racial profiling—some argue a motive in Trayvon's killing.
“What this is, is the branding of African American men with criminality,” Holmes Norton said.
For one panel member, the Trayvon Martin case painfully familiar.
Charles Rawlings 14-year-old son Deonte was shot and killed in 2007 by an off-duty officer who claims Deonte stole his mini-bike and shot at him. Those claims were never proven against the teen, yet, the officer was cleared.
The ache of injustice and the pain of losing a child continue to haunt this father, who says Trayvon Martin’s family is now in his prayers.
“I didn't want to come here today. You know why? Because it's so painful that he's not there no more. To hold him, to squeeze him, to see that big smile on his face and nobody locked up—and they still still walking around. It wasn’t no justice,” Rawlings said.
