HandsOn Greater D.C. Cares gathers volunteers for Servathon
Amateur artists crammed the hallways of For Love of Children in Northwest D.C. Friday, breathing fumes and painting walls. They were there all in the name of public service.
Each year, HandsOn Greater D.C. Cares rounds up a city-wide army of volunteers for Servathon, the group's largest annual service project.
"We are doing some lively fabulous colors and the kids will love it,” says Bob Madigan, WTOP's Man About Town. “And they won't notice it wasn't done by people who knew what they were doing."
"We've had so much fun, just even painting each other, I mean, [my coworker] has already stamped me! It's been a lot of fun,” says Lily Heil, Walker and Dunlop employee.
She is one of 10,000 who will swarm 96 service spots from Friday through Saturday.
"I think the goal is to get the word out that there are tons of organizations all over D.C. that are doing really great things every day to improve our community,” says Denise Hernandez, of For Love of Children.
Nathan Hager, WTOP Reporter, says she loves any opportunity to get out in the community, help out and show that they want to be part of the community.
Up town, it was ice cream and clean up at the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
"We had two teams and we set up the cook out that you are at currently, and we also cleaned a ton of shrubbery off the fence,” says Amanda Moore, HandsOn Greater D.C. Cares.
Some hit the dance floor, delighted.
"Oh yeah, they did a great job, the volunteers were wonderful," says Dallas Lamb, Armed Forces Retirement Home resident.
Friday it was corporate sponsored giving. But Saturday, volunteers gave their personal time
