Home where George Washington, Thomas Jefferson stayed to be auctioned
How would you like to own a piece of American history?
In two weeks, the oldest house in Prince William County will go on the auction block.
Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both stayed at the Bel Air Mansion.
And now the home is looking for a new owner.
The 18th-century estate is tucked away in a sub-division in Prince William County.
"It was built by Charles Ewell, and he built the house right between 1740 and 1743," says Bill Naedele who owns the house.
Together Naedle and his wife kept the integrity of the house intact and added a few modern touches. His wife also kept the place well-decorated with antiques.
But now Bill says it's time to pass on the keys to someone else.
"What I'm interested in doing is finding someone that can be the next shepherd of the property and take care of it and maintain it," he says.
The 25-acre property might just be a history buff's dream home.
Mason Locke Weems, George Washington's first biographer, once lived there.
"George and Martha Washington were overnight guests of the Ewells on their honeymoon journey to Mount Vernon," according to the auction website.
"You just don't find a property with the historical value and as well-maintained as this coming up for sale," says Jeff Stein, partner in Tranzon Auctions.
The estate will be sold to the highest bidder.
"It'll be a live auction on site," Stein says. "To bid everyone needs to bring a cashiers check to get a bidder number."
The minimum bid is expected to be under $1 million.
Stein says people from all across the country are inquiring about this property. The bidding starts April 18th.
