Several Howard University student athletes have been ruled ineligible as part of a series of self-reported violations, a school spokeswoman confirmed to the Washington Post Thursday.

The move comes a day after confirmed that some athletes have been  temporarily withheld from competing while the school conducts an internal investigation into potential NCAA violations.

Howard spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Sullivan declined to disclose to the Post exactly how many student-athletes had been disqualified, nor would she comment on the severity of the violations the school reported.

In a statement Thursday, Sullivan that all actions taken by the school are self-imposed and that most in-season sports would continue to compete as scheduled.

The decision was first reported by the Washington City Paper.

Despite school saying that most sports would continue as scheduled, a Naval Academy athletics spokesman confirmed to ABC 7 News that Howard had canceled its women's tennis match against the Midshipmen on Thursday.

Navy Assistant Sports Information Director Chris Forman said that the school gave no reason for why they had called off the match and that it was unlikely that the match would be rescheduled.

Howard's softball team has games scheduled for Friday and Saturday against Coppin State. Coppin State Sports Information Director Roger McAfee told ABC 7 that there was "no indication" that their games against the Bison would be called off.

Row over textbook vouchers?

A Howard bowling team athlete told City Paper that the school allowed students to spend leftover money from textbook vouchers on non-textbook items.

Howard is now demanding that any improperly spent money must be returned and student athletes can’t register for classes until they repay it, according to City Paper.

"Most teams will compete as scheduled," stated university spokesperson Kerry-Ann Hamilton. "We are working diligently to fully resolve this matter as quickly as a possible. In order to protect the integrity of this review, we are unable to share additional details at this time."

Current sports that are in season and affected by the suspension include men's and women's tennis, track & field, softball and women's lacrosse.

Howard's women's lacrosse team recently forfeited a March 30 game against Longwood and another game, scheduled for April 1, against Liberty. The softball team also had games with Norfolk State, scheduled for March 31 and April 1, canceled as well.

The next scheduled Howard athletic event is a women's tennis match against Navy on Thursday. The school's softball, women's lacrosse and track teams are all scheduled to play in the next two weeks as well.

Everett Will, who runs the @DCAbloob Twitter feed, notes that the school's official Twitter page, @howardathletics, has not sent out an update since March 15. For some sports, match results have not been updated on the school's website since mid-March.

The last listed result for a Howard team was a 12-5 softball loss to UMBC on March 29.
