Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say they have arrested more than 3,000 fugitive aliens as part of a nationwide effort that targeted criminal illegal immigrants and immigration law violators.

Dubbed "Cross Check," the six-day operation conducted last week was the largest of its kind, ICE officials say. Arrests were made in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia and three U.S. Territories.

Those arrested include 195 from Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Officials say 20 of those arrests were made in Alexandria alone. Click here for a full list of cities and towns where arrests were made.

ICE officials say that more than 2,800 of the arrestees had prior criminal convictions, including more than 1,000 who had been convicted on multiple occasions, The crimes these people were found guilty of include murder, kidnapping, child abuse, assault and numerous other violent and non-violent crime, including drug offenses.

Nearly 700 of the arrested had already been ordered to leave the United States bud hadn't. More than 500 of them had illegally re-entered the country after they had been deported.

"The results of this targeted enforcement operation underscore ICE's ongoing commitment and focus on the arrest and removal of convicted criminal aliens and those that game our nation's immigration system," ICE Director John Morton said.

"Cross Check" was the third operation of its kind; a 2009 operation netted 7,400 arrests of convicted criminal aliens, while a September 2011 sweep caught 2,900 people.

Among the arrested in this sweep include a Jamaican man, living in Washington state, who was wanted in his home country for murder, a Mexican national convicted in a 1984 murder and a Cambodian man who was convicted in 2000 of manslaughter, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
