Levon Helm dies: The Band drummer, singer dies at 71
April 19, 2012 - 03:23 pm
Levon Helm has died, Rolling Stone reports.
Helm, 71, was the singer and drummer for The Band. He had been in the final stages of throat cancer leading up to his death.
Rolling Stone reports that Helm's death was confirmed to them by Larry Campbell, the longtime guitarist for The Band, at about 1:30 p.m.
Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in the late 1990s. In a message posted on his website earlier this month, Helm's family thanked the musician's fans for all their support.
"He has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance!" the message said. "He did it every time he took the stage."
