April 5, 2012 - 05:13 am
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski is known for her outspoken support of space exploration.
On Thursday, she will have a supernova named after her at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
Supernova Mikulski is a distant exploding star that was spotted earlier this year by the Hubble Telescope.
The supernova is 7.4 billion light years away.
The senator will be presented with a framed photo and data disk of the supernova.
The Space Telescope Institute serves as the science operations center for the Hubble.
It will be the science and mission operations center for the James Webb Space Telescope after its launch.
