Mitt Romney takes the GOP lead after Santorum drops

“I look forward to his work in helping assure victories for Republicans across the country in November,” Romney said.

“While this Presidential race for us is over, we are not done fighting,” Santorum said.

But analysts say, despite Santorum's surprising success, increasing pressure within the GOP made this announcement inevitable.

Perhaps the final straw, Santorum faced an uphill battle and the possibility of losing his home state of Pennsylvania in two weeks.
