Pe’Shon Howard, point guard for the Maryland Terrapins men's basketball team, has been arrested for disorderly conduct, campus police say.
At about 3:25 a.m. Sunday, police were flagged down at Shanghai Café on Route 1.
An officer went inside and found a group holding back a male who appeared to be the aggressor, according to a spokesperson for the University of Maryland police.
When officers took the man outside to talk to him, Howard began taunting the man and got him riled up. police say.
The officer asked Howard to stop talking to the other man. When Howard refused, he was arrested for disorderly conduct.
Howard denied the police account of the incident in a phone interview with DiamondOnline, the University of Maryland Independent Student Newspaper.
"They thought that I was instigating," Howard said. "But people around me said I wasn't."
According to the spokesperson, police took Howard to the station with the intention of booking him and keeping him in custody, but because of the volume they decided to release him on a citation.
