Teens drinking hand sanitizer to get drunk, officials say
April 24, 2012 - 10:22 am
Parents, teachers and authorities apparently have a new problem to battle when it comes to teens getting drunk, and it's found at the local pharmacy.
According to KTLA in Los Angeles, six teenagers were sent to emergency rooms throughout Southern California recently after drinking hand sanitizer.
The sanitizer gels, which are extremely inexpensive, can be made up of more than 60 percent ethyl alcohol, which equates to the alcohol proof of many hard liquors.
"All it takes is just a few swallows and you have a drunk teenager," Cyrus Rangan, the director of the toxicology bureau of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, told KTLA.
