Tow truck broadsides ambulance, causing multiple injuries in Clinton
A Prince George's County ambulance taking a patient to a hospital was hit by a tow truck Sunday, causing a three-vehicle crash and injuring at least three people in Clinton.
The ambulance, with all emergency warning devices on and activated, was making a left turn from south-bound Branch Avenue to go onto Surratts Road when it was broadsided by the tow truck traveling north on Route 5, according to a statement from Prince George’s Fire Department.
The ambulance then hit a passenger vehicle. It happened just after 5 p.m.
The driver of the ambulance, a career firefighter/medic, was taken to a trauma center where his injuries were determined to be not serious.
A volunteer firefighter/EMT providing care to the patient in the back of the ambulance sustained less serious injuries and was transported to Southern Maryland Hospital.
The original patient was transported to the hospital in another ambulance. There was no report on whether that patient was injured.
A man in the third vehicle was transported to a trauma center as a precaution. His injuries are not considered serious and are non-life threatening.
Traffic citations are pending against the tow truck driver.
The ambulance incurred significant damage and could be considered a total loss.
A joint crash investigation will continue by Prince George’s County Police and safety officers from the Fire/EMS Department.
